The distance of Scrimshire's Scramble is really 10.5km (shh, don't tell anyone) as we really wanted to feature Cuckoo bridge right at the very start of the run on Scrimshire's Road, and we also really, really wanted the run to finish right outside the Windmill too. Small compromise right?
It is an out and back route that only shares around 1.75km (1 mile) of same routing. You will be heading west along the old road to Retford (Retford Gate) before a slight detour towards the old Retford to Lincoln railway line and parallel to that for a distance, then back onto the old road called Cut Throat Lane. Lovely. Through some trees here and eventually out into the fields with a beautiful view overlooking Bassetlaw and probably South Yorkshire. Once you've left the fields, you will be heading back eastwards along an ancient track with more beautiful views of North Lincolnshire, then up a fair gradient to re-join Cut Throat Lane. Nice. Once out of the trees, another glorious view of the Trent Valley should present itself to you as you head along the arrow-straight track and down what is known locally as Tractor Groove Hill. From here the striking white onion cap of the Windmill should be coming to view; you are almost finished! Mega!
We fully expect it to be muddy. We would like to see you muddy.
Pretty much all of it is off-road. There is a mix of lanes that will be firm underfoot yet will have plenty of puddles to cool your toes down; some PROW footpaths through fields and at the edges; grass tracks / bridleways, and one section that involves tree root hopping (not falling please) that you do twice. This section has the potential to become brilliantly sloppy with mud. Enjoy it, and laugh.
Trail running shoes or shoes with sound grip are advised.
